Chairman’s Corner
Spring has finally sprung and hopefully we will have got rid of the snow by the time you read this! A big thank-you to all of you who attended our Burns Supper – our biggest supper/lunch apart from Remembrance Sunday. Mandy has summarised what’s coming up on the Twinning calendar so I won’t repeat it here. It certainly seems busy, though.
We have had an offer from Berck for two students to spend a fortnight working at the Marie (Town Hall). This would be of interest I’m sure to anyone intending to take language studies or maybe tourism as a further education or job option. Contact myself if you know of anyone interested. There has been no mention of dates, though presumably not August as France goes on holiday then!
You will see that there are Anniversary events in both Berck and Poperinge this year: we will be planning for our own 25th Anniversary for 2007 so what would you like us to be looking at? Ideas, please, to any committee member. Volunteers to help also welcome!
Just one more thing – calling all Gardeners out there: we would really like to have a plant stall at the Coffee Morning (strangely, the French also call it le “Coffee Morning”) in April. Would anyone be prepared to run it for us?
A bien tot Kevin
Coffee Morning
Our annual Coffee Morning will be held at the Town Hall on Saturday 29th April. doors open at 9.30am This is an ideal opportunity for us to recruit new members. We will have our exhibition, homemade cake stall, (contributions greatly received) and large tombola.
We look forward to seeing you on the day.
For those of who attended the Burn’s Night Supper (and there were not many of you that didn’t!) will know we had an excellent evening at Sotorio’s.
Thank you, Ken for all the additional work that you put into this successful evening. We will be going Rosie’s at a later date in the year but numbers will be limited. St George’s Day – Sunday 23rd April will be our next luncheon. Forms being sent out to you, again, please return promptly so as not to be disappointed. This has proved a popular event to attend in the past.
Berck International Kite Festival The dates for this event are Saturday 9th April to Sunday 16th April. If anyone is interested in attending please contact Kevin or Amanda. Although we are not planning to take a coach over for the day there maybe sufficient numbers to arrange cars/mini bus for the day. We understand that a Firework display on the last Saturday evening (Easter Saturday)
Berck 25th Anniversary Weekend
Berck will be celebrating 25 years with Hythe and 30 years with Badoneff their German twin town on the weekend of Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June. The celebration will be in the form of a ‘Festival of Music’. We are planning to take a coach over on the Saturday 24th for the day, so you can have a look around the town and listen to the various concerts being held on the Saturday. We understand the Hythe Town Concert Band have been invited as have the East Kent Morrismen.
There is a Church service on the Sunday morning.
If any member is interested in staying over the weekend, please advice Kevin or Amanda by 1st April as accommodation will have to be booked. Either with families or Hotel.
HYTHE FESTIVAL WEEK HTA is supporting Festival week Saturday 1st July – you will see the band Diapason from Poperinge will be in the first part of the parade down the High Street. This is only their second visit to Hythe. In addition leading the second part of the parade will be the band from Berck. We will be looking for helpers to chaperone both bands on the Saturday, this is just ensure they are in the right place at the correct time. If you can spare a couple of hours Saturday morning or after lunch please let Amanda know.
Also this Saturday will see the Sashing of the 6th ‘Miss Hythe Festival’. Nomination forms enclosed should you know anyone who maybe interested. There are many prizes to be won and the opportunity to attend as many Festival events as you can.
The following weekend sees the return of St Cecelia Band from Poperinge They will be taking part in the Beating the Retreat on the Hythe green. On the Sunday afternoon there will be a concert in Oaklands.
I see from the website www.hythefestival.co.uk there is only 93 days to count down!!!
Poperinge
On Sunday 28th May we are planning to take a coach across to Poperinge to hear a concert performed by the Cecelia Band in celebration of their 175th Anniversary. We are aiming to leave Hythe around 9.30am giving you an opportunity to walk around the town or sit and have a few local beers! before lunch. We understand there will be a local type market in the park as well as other attractions. After the concert we will make our way back to the tunnel for duty free shopping
