Walk 2: 3 miles (4.8 km). Proceeds east along the promenade toward Sandgate and returns along the Royal Military Canal. There are two opportunities to cross the Canal before the furthest point to shorten the route if desired.

Details: Leaving Oaklands turn right along the Canal and after the Bowling Club turn right into Ladies Walk. After the Cricket Ground turn left along Wakefield Walk and proceed to Twiss Road. Turn right and, at the promenade (Princes Parade), go east, past the Imperial Hotel and on past the golf course, until reaching a wind shelter (1½ miles (2.4 km) from the start). Take the tarmac footpath left to a Canal bridge. Cross the Canal and turn left along the footpath back to Hythe (there is an elevated grassed path if you want to keep the Canal in view), cross Twiss Road and continue alongside the Canal to Oaklands. Taking earlier paths from the promenade to bridges over the Canal can shorten the walk. The first opportunity is a north-south path half way along the golf course, and the next at the end of the fairway. These linking paths are firm, but not tarmac..
